RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The site, located using surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several entry passages down to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike shows British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their courage," Healey added. "They were among thousands of British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in the country, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
