European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.

Other Developments in the News

In related legal developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked attempts to cut federal homeland security funding to states that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge ruled the action was “a further instance” of tying federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of 350 national guard members to New Orleans prior to the new year, alongside an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to take in dozens of migrants from the US in return for increased assistance, following signing a formal agreement with Washington.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action seeking the removal of the current president’s name from a well-known cultural institution in the capital.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with historical international actions.
