Pentagon Investigation Concludes Defense Secretary Put Military Personnel in Danger with Messaging App Chat.

A long-awaited Pentagon review has concluded that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth breached departmental policies by sharing classified information in a Signal messaging chat, as stated by a source familiar with the report.

Details of the Event

The online conversation in question contained details about a scheduled air attack in Yemen against Houthi fighters. This chat came to light after a reporter for the Atlantic was added as a participant.

Other officials in the group allegedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The report focused solely on the conduct of Hegseth, as the other participants are not employed at the Pentagon.

Signal is a publicly available communication application that was not approved for transmitting sensitive material.

Serious Threat to Troops

The internal investigation found that the intelligence shared by Hegseth was classified and could have endangered the safety of US service members if it had been intercepted by a foreign enemy force.

However, the document also noted that Hegseth had the ability to declassify the information he distributed, though it was not specified whether he actually did so.

Hegseth's Reaction

The informed individual indicated that Hegseth declined an interview by the inspector general. Instead, he submitted a brief written statement.

In his statement, Hegseth claimed he only disclosed details that would not have endangered personnel or compromised the mission. He added that he had the right to downgrade information and viewed the inspector general to be politically motivated.

Future Actions

The finalized investigation has been provided to Congress. An unclassified version is anticipated to be released later this week.
