A recent study reveals that individuals who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People purchasing such drugs need to be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.
Weighing Treatments
The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."
A Chronic Condition?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Accounts
People who have discontinued the medication explain a intense resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if something flipping and you're instantly starving," said an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Use is greater among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians caution that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural management.
